The concept behind Birmingham newcomer, Hazel, Ravines and Downtown came from a flash of inspiration. Co-owners Beth Hussey and Executive Chef Emmele Herrold dreamt of opening a restaurant together more than a decade before they opened the doors to HRD in October 2018.

Hussey and Chef Herrold aimed to capture a modern appetite for inspired-yet-accessible dishes – at any time of day.  At HRD, Herrold’s menu is divided into three concepts. Each is named for a Birmingham neighborhood. Hazel features classic, familiar comfort foods. Ravines reveals a well-traveled culinary sensibility and Downtown is an ever-changing menu characterized by trend-setting dishes. Each of the three concepts follows an array of option: snackable sharing boards, soups and salads, burgers and sandwiches, entrees and side dishes.

Hazel, Ravines and Downtown is rooted in a farm-to-table concept that highlights its scratch kitchen and fresh ingredients. Its 10,000 square feet of space with five distinct settings: a market with fresh juices, fresh sandwiches, snacks and sundries for those on the go; open dining for 130 people, a welcoming horseshoe-shaped bar; a small grotto with 20 seats outdoors and a flexible event space for up to 100 people in one to four rooms.

“We want customers to feel as comfortable stopping in after a workout as they would meeting friends for Happy Hour or hosting an impressive business lunch,” said Herrold. The setting, menu and staff want to provide something for everyone – and something new to those who live and work in Birmingham.

At HRD, Owners Hussey and Herrold bring forward a gathering place the entire community can embrace. They offer fine food and drink – from the familiar to the inventive – and share a strong connection to the city itself. The owners and staff at HRD look forward to welcoming you this, their first, Birmingham Restaurant Week. Learn more at https://www.hrd.kitchen/.
